Analogue Days

After many years of digital, I decided I would have a go with film again. That got off to a good and bad start. I bought a Nikon F2, a camera I had always wanted since I was at school in the 1970’s. I bought an F2 body from a trusted retailer, Ffordes of Beauly, excellent service as usual and highly recommended. I already had a Nikon 50mm f1.8 E and Nikkor 35-105mm lenses so I was good to go. Or so I thought. 30 years of autofocus auto exposure film and digital Canon SLR and Fujifilm mirrorless cameras makes life easy for you… going back to a manual only Nikon F2 was a real step back in photographic time. Am I liking it? Yes. It is easy? No. I buy my film from and get my processing and scanning done by Analogue Wonderland, a fantastic company run by real enthusiasts and thoroughly recommended. Here are some efforts on Fomapan 400, developed and scanned by Analogue Wonderland. Processing and scanning very good, my photography not so much.

In the above image you can see Camperdown House through the trees in Camperdown Park in Dundee. The house was built for Admiral Duncan. Below is the front of the house. I expect quite a few staff were required to run a house like that.

The house sits in a local authority country park and part of it was once the clubhouse of a local golf club.

Winter Harbour Walk

We took Max for a walk at Arbroath harbour as we often do. The fishing boats were in the harbour for the weekend and there was maintenance being done on some of the boats. I saw these boats berthed next to each other and I liked the colours under the winter sun.

Lobster creels and pleasure boats. The marina at Arbroath harbour is well used. In contrast to the fishing boats in the main harbour, the marina is well used by pleasure boats of all sizes and budgets. At the other side of the marina is the RNLI lifeboat shed from where their Mersey class all weather lifeboat and D class inshore lifeboat are regularly launched.

The day wouldn’t be complete without a picture of Max. He is on the harbour wall with his fur being blown by the strong wind. The harbour at Arbroath can be very windy, but turn the corner and there is shelter to be had. Max loves it.

Boats in the water, creels on the harbour and the smokehouse in the background. You don’t get fresher fish than that and they are very tasty too. The block of flats to the right have a fantastic view over the harbour.

Winter in Aviemore

We had a winter break in Aviemore at the end of February for a change. It snowed on and off throughout the week. We had a visit to Loch Garten, from where we parked to the osprey centre was a 5 mile round trip.

This was taken not far from the small car park, the snow in the woods was untouched.

Further on we came across this small lochan with a viewing platform. The lochan was frozen over with a coating of snow. The tree stumps sticking out of the lochan gave the place a surreal dead feeling.

We eventually got to the end of our route, the osprey centre. Across the road was this view across Loch Garten. It was very cold but worth the effort and we had the return journey to look forward to.

Storm Ciara At Monifieth

I was out for a walk with Max this afternoon during a break in the rain from storm Ciara. We went to the beach to see what the waves were like, quite stormy as you can see! The storm defences have held up as best they could but there has been a lot of erosion behind them. Our usual path has been washed away.

Santa Cruz Music

IMG_0024

On holiday in Tenerife we had a day out in Santa Cruz which was good. The opera house is an amazing structure. We were having a wander through the older part of town and saw this guy playing his trumpet.

Stormy Tay Sunset

Monifieth beach storm

It was getting really stormy in Monifieth so I headed across to the beach with Max and my camera. The clouds were moving past quite quickly and the light was changing all the time as it got darker. Needless to say we had the beach to ourselves.

Seaton Cliffs

Arbroath cliffs frame

Out for a walk along the cliffs at Arbroath, I was drawn to the sea framed nicely through the hole in the sandstone cliff. I particularly liked the way the sun lit the cliff and brought out the red in the sandstone.

Serene Spey

Fishing hut Spey

Out for a walk along the banks of the river Spey, I spotted this fishing hut on the opposite bank. The water was quite calm and I was drawn to the reflection of the hut in the river, particularly the red roof.

Cairngorm Forest

Pine forest Morlich

Pine forest near Loch Morlich. I liked the softened light in the trees even though it was bright overhead. I find being in a pine forest like this quite calming and peaceful.

Arbroath Fishing Boats

DSCF2300

Out for a walk at Arbroath harbour, I saw theseĀ 4 fishing boats lined up in a row. I particularly liked the way one of them was pointing in the opposite direction, like a petulant child.
